The oath never expires
Many brave souls have answered the call of patriotism and trained in preparation to defend their country. These individuals have pledged their lives for the cause of freedom and should never be forgotten from history.
Richard Hoffmeyer is one such of these figures.
Richard ties together his experiences in the military and with Convention of States (COS) with one simple phrase, “You have to show up.” His words exemplify his commitment not only to the military and COS, but to anything worth pursuing in life.
Currently Richard serves as a leader of Convention of States’ Veteran Coalition for Iowa. He heads up a team of 500 veterans in the state, all working to further the cause of Convention of States.
The year was 1970
Richard had just graduated from high school. Due to the ongoing war in Vietnam, he decided to enlist in the Air Force, rather than eventually be drafted into the army. After basic training, technical school, and on-job training, Richard was assigned to an airbase in Thailand as an aircraft weapons system technician.
Only a couple months passed before he received a new assignment on an airbase in Vietnam. During the year he spent overseas, Richard transferred multiple times between his original post in Thailand, and various airbases in Vietnam, serving wherever he was most needed. At the war’s end, Richard reassignment brought him stateside where he traded his remaining active-duty time for double-time in the Air National Guard. He exited honorably as a Staff Sergeant in April of 1976.
A new way to serve the country
Ultimately Richard would continue to serve his country in an equally important way: preserving the Constitution for the next generation of American citizens. During the presidential tour in Iowa, Richard heard of Convention of States, a grassroots movement intent on restoring the original intent of the Constitution through an Article V convention. Intrigued, he investigated and quickly signed on as a grassroots volunteer.
After receiving several online training sessions pertaining to the Article V process, Richard began investing himself, once again, in preserving his country. He helped with various grassroots projects, including manning a booth at the annual Iowa State Fair. Along with a team of dedicated activists, Richard engaged fair-goers in discussions about Article V, and gathered petition signatures in support of Convention of States.
By the end of the fair, the COS team had successfully collected over 4000 petition signatures, a project of which Richard is proud to have been a part.
Convention of States is the only solution to the rampant federal overreach in America. Richard and thousands of other veterans across the country have once again answered their country’s call. They work tirelessly to defend the nation and its Constitution.
America would not exist today if it were not for the many selfless sacrifices made by its citizens. Our founder and our veterans have pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor for the preservation of our country. We should do the same.
