Trust in both Media & Govt. Deservedly Low

Published in Blog on November 04, 2024 by John A Luce

Heads Up!
There are certain newsworthy topics that may warrant being “headlines" (treated as major developments) by major media, while other equally noteworthy events somehow never quite make it. This is such a one.
Someone at the top of mega media organizations - more likely a powerful editorial board - makes decisions regarding what stories deserve the most attention to emerge as “headlines” in what used to be daily but now are continually updated headline grabbers within the 24 hour news cycle… all designed to spur interest and influence the reading/listening and watching public.
Can we truly rely upon their independence as purely fact-based decision-makers in prioritizing their stories of the moment?
Few rational thinkers and experienced adults would think so.
Here is the concentration of ownership of our news feeds (and commentary - whether overt or covert) in the United States:
There are a total of 6 mega media owners:
"That’s the number of conglomerates estimated to control 90% of the media — empowered by deregulation of ownership in the Telecommunications Act of 1996 — although measures vary and properties change hands.
Several of them own news outlets, including Disney (ABC, ESPN, Vice), Warner Bros. Discovery (CNN), and Comcast (NBC, CNBC, MSNBC, Telemundo), which earned $121.57 billion in 2023. That’s more than Tesla, IBM or Bank of America.”*
That is cause for concern for all who rely upon major media for updating and understanding global developments in every category of newsworthy events, together with all the related interpretation, delivered by these organizations.
Continuous exposure to such limited and often uniform (across the board) news coverage generates plausible suspicion as to the veracity (lack of bias) within the “products” major media disseminate. This decline in approval has arisen as a number of newsworthy stories have been debunked, so public faith in the so-called “news” has diminished. This explains in large part why the public has shifted to alternative platforms to seek differing viewpoints.
Oct. 2024 Gallup Poll:
"For the third consecutive year, more U.S. adults have no trust at all in the media (36%) than trust it a great deal or fair amount. Another 33% of Americans express “not very much” confidence.”

If you are concerned about whether you’re getting the truth from either the major media or from officials within our federal government, consider researching our non-partisan self-governing grassroots movement; please read and sign the petition calling for an Article V convention aiming to return our republic to reflect our Framers’ Federalist vision of restoring a smaller, less intrusive central authority, with congressional term limits, and calling for fiscal responsibility in Washington DC.
As we can see:
Concentration of power in any form (media or government) can be an invitation to misuse such power.
