Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum joined Convention of States Regional Director Jonathan Viaud on Wednesday for an exclusive episode of COS at Home, where the two talked all things COS and shared an exciting announcement about the upcoming Simulated Article V Convention.
To kick off the night, Viaud and Santorum joked about the recent White House cocaine scandal.
“It’s really interesting that they would give up on this investigation as quickly as they have,” the Senator noted. “Obviously, the administration doesn’t want anyone to be found out…. It’s not surprising they [got] in. It is surprising that there isn’t evidence of who was in that area during the time.”
He added that the fruitless investigation further undermined trust in the institution of government.
“That’s what we’ve seen—this degradation of society led by people who think that they can be the authoritarians. And this is what COS is all about: trying to attack this authoritarian bed in Washington, where, as in ‘Animal Farm,’ everyone’s equal but some are more equal than others. You’re seeing people being treated ‘more equal’ than others, and that is undermining confidence in our institutions.”
Santorum described how Article V is the solution to rebuilding trust in American society and recapped all that he has done this year to advance that solution. He pointed out that, although we did not officially pass our resolution in any states this year, “in Kansas, we passed in both legislatures.” Due to an unconstitutional technicality in Kansas law, our victory in the Sunflower State cannot officially be counted, however, he said he has “no doubt” the issue will be litigated and “Kansas will be the 20th state [to pass the COS resolution].”

In addition to working with the Kansas legislature, Santorum has traveled the nation advocating for COS. He said that North Carolina is also close to passing and that Iowa and Idaho very likely could pass next year.
He urged the grassroots to build relationships with their legislators and remember that legislative season never ends.
“The more that you and others are present in their lives, expressing your concern and advocacy for this position, the bigger the impact it will have on them,” he advised.
Shifting his focus to the Convention of States Foundation’s upcoming Simulated Article V Convention in Colonial Williamsburg, Santorum shared that the event will “train people to be leaders in the cause.”
“Bills don’t get passed without champions,” he said, noting that the simulation will raise up new leaders to champion COS.“The sponsor is the one who drives the engine to get it done. Hundreds of bills pass legislatures every year, and every one of them has a champion.”
Rick Santorum serves as a Senior Advisor and invaluable asset to Convention of States. He, along with Convention of States President Mark Meckler, Mike Farris, and delegates from all 50 states, will be in attendance at the simulation. COS supporters nationwide will be given a special insider’s look into the event with an exclusive live stream on Friday, August 4th.
