Hi moms! Convention of States Michigan is here for you! Timeout with COS Moms! Grab your tea, coffee or cocktail! It’s time for your timeout!
Listen, my children, and you shall hear...it’s one of the most famous opening lines in American culture. It’s a tale of a midnight ride, two lamps in a belfry tower, and a man on horseback riding for the future existence of his country.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is among the most famous of classic American poets. His work includes Evangeline, A Psalm of Life, and A Tale of Acadie. Longfellow’s life and works are worth studying and reading with your children. He is one of the few American writers/poets who is honored with a bust at the Poet’s Corner of Westminster Abbey. I’ll write more about him at a future date...
Arguably, his most famous work is Paul Revere’s Ride.
The American Revolution was in its infancy, and on April 18, 1775, two lamps were placed in the belfry tower of the Old North Church in Boston- a second lamp in the belfry burns! That was the signal! The British were coming by sea! And Paul Revere made his famous ride across the nearby towns, including Lexington and Concord. The first battles of the American Revolution would soon follow at those towns in the coming days.
You can study more about Paul Revere through the nonprofit, Paul Revere House.
You can read the poem in its entirety, find the real story, interactive maps of the famous ride and more! Find it here.
Own the book, with beautiful illustrations for your family. Having a copy of the poem to hold brings the story to life!
Take the time to understand why Paul Revere’s ride was so important and the kind of heroism and courage it takes to start a nation!
