Alaska has passed the first hurdle, but the hardest battles lie ahead of us. To save our country we don't just need 34 states to call the convention but 38 states to ratify. Alaskans must work hard to ensure that America can count on our vote!
Many conventions have been controversial and difficult, but none have been so tenuous as the convention that gave us our modern Constitution. Thank God that they succeeded, but it wasn't so clear that they would.
Alexander Hamilton left us warnings, lessons, and reminders in the first Federalist Paper that can guide us as we work to replicate the achievements of our great Founders in getting the public to reaffirm our great Constitution.
1) Critics say that we don't have the power, smarts, or right to debate improving the Constitution. Hamilton objects, "Look around you. How's that old "court-institution" holding up?" He said when the government isn't working, then YOU are called upon to fix it. It's your duty as an American. And, we all know Washington has been broken for years and getting worse all the time.
2) Hamilton reminds us that the whole world is watching us. For the freedom lovers and haters everywhere, we are the proof of whether or not self-government works; remember that as you fight to awaken your friends and save your country, liberty, and power. We must prove that we are able to govern ourselves for the whole world. Or, self-government will be lost forever.
3) Hamilton teaches us that the secret to winning this ratification debate is twofold. First, we must always argue from a love of truth and truth alone. Second, we must remember that there are many evil men on both sides of this question, and many good men on both sides of the question. Never assume bad intentions from your opponents; show them love, sugar, & truth.
