Americans suspected earlier this year that the real reason the Democrats refused to compromise on their COVID aid relief bill was their dislike of giving President Trump a win just before the election. We said as much all the way back in September, but of course no politicians actually admitted it.
Now we have proof.
First, Democrats are considering a deal that is significantly lower than their original $2.2 trillion deal. The current compromise would only cost $908 billion, which is less than half of the deal the White House offered ($1.8 trillion). If the Democrats believed so strongly that the country needed $2.2 trillion, why are they now willing to accept only $908 billion?
The answer, of course, is that it looks like Joe Biden will win the election. Now that President Trump looks to be headed out, they're more than happy to compromise and get a bill passed.
A Democratic senator admitted as much. CNN's Jake Tapper pointed out to Sen. Dick Durbin that the current bill is significantly lower than the deal the Democrats refused prior to the election. Durbin's response? We had an election coming up.
“There was some exuberance involved because an election was coming," he said. "and they were both bidding one another and trying to find common ground. They didn’t reach that point."
Our politicians don't care about us. They care about winning elections, and they're willing to risk the livelihoods of their constituents to do it. We need to send a message to our elected officials: "We pay your salary. Do the job we sent you to D.C. to do."
Voting is an important part of that message, but it isn't enough. We need to change how Washington operates, and the only way to do that is through a Convention of States.
An Article V Convention of States is called and controlled by the states and has the power to propose constitutional amendments. These amendments can shrink the size, scope, and jurisdiction of the federal government, limiting the power of federal officials and putting them back in their constitutional box.
We can't keep hoping that the next batch of congresspeople will work hard and respect our wishes. We need to take our future into our own hands, and we can do it with a Convention of States.
