The Mission: Back to Basics

Published in Blog on February 16, 2022 by Matt May

Now that the Massachusetts General Court's Joint Committee on Veterans and Federal Affairs favorably reported the Article V Convention of States resolution, the Massachusetts COS team is going back to the fundamentals.

As we await word as to which committee will next receive the resolution (we have heard either Rules or Ways and Means), Mass COS is busy writing emails and handwritten thank-you notes to the members of the Joint Committee on Veterans and Federal Affairs.

As we know, grassroots federalism in action means engaging and enhancing relationships with our state representatives and senators.

Once the COS resolution has been assigned to a committee, we will again trumpet our support through handwritten letters, emails, and phone calls to legislator and their staffs.

Our local meetings and events will amplify and expand support for COS among citizens of the Commonwealth.

We will establish TelePatriot missions to encourage supporters of COS to contact their representatives in great numbers to back the resolution.

In keeping with the non-partisan nature of our quest, we will actively seek more co-sponsors in the General Court regardless of party affiliation.

As can be seen across the republic, the COS movement effectively demonstrates the importance of citizen participation at the state level. Such participation reminds legislators of their proximity to the sovereign, and that they, too, are not beholden to federal government. It reinforces the answer to the all-important question: Who rules?

While the mechanics of adding Massachusetts to the roll of states that have approved the call for a Convention of States are yet to be determined, the mission is clear.

And, to paraphrase our great champion in the General Court, Rep. Steve Xiarhos: You give us a mission, we're gonna get it done.
