The Florida Constitutional Review Commission Is Making Progress

Published in Blog on February 18, 2018 by Eugene L Cloud

The Duo-decennial (every-twenty years) convening of the Florida Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) has been going on since summer of 2017 as required by Article XI Section 2 of the Florida Constitution.  They are due to wrap up their work this summer (2018) so that Amendment Proposals can be placed on the ballot for ratification/rejection by the voters in the November 2018 General Election.

The CRC consists of thirty-seven members appointed by the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of the Florida Government.  The Governor appoints 15 members and the selects the Chairman.  The Speaker of the FL House appoints nine, and the President of the Florida Senate appoints nine. And the Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court also appoints three members. The Attorney General of Florida is automatically a member of the Commission.

The Commission established a web site (https://www.flcrc.gov) and asked for input from the public.  The public responded with 781-numbered proposals.  The Commission established rules for their operation and created committees roughly aligned with the Articles of the Florida Constitution to consider public proposals, issues that were raised at public hearings or concerns of the Commissioners.

This is important to all Florida Voters.  You will be asked to consider making changes to the fundamental law of the State of Florida.  The Commission is considering proposals in an orderly way by hearing testimony in committee on each proposal. The Commission is still holding Public Hearings.  The website provides information about upcoming hearings. As of February 17, 2018, the Commissioners are working on thirty-nine proposals; some may be rejected.  Once the Commission approves an amendment it will be placed on the ballot.

What would you do if thirty-nine amendments were on the ballot in 2018?    If the first time you heard of or saw thirty-nine amendments was in the voting booth would you make good decisions for you, your family, and your state?

We will track the Commissions work and bring you updates. Below is a table listing the thirty-nine proposals.  Click on the proposal number in the left-hand column to jump to a summary text of the proposal and to a links to each proposals text on the CRC website.
