South Dakota House State Affairs Committee passes COS resolution!

Published in Blog on February 03, 2025 by Jakob Fay

Fox News host Laura Ingraham once remarked, “South Dakota is a great state because of its values, not because of dependence on government.” This statement has never been more timely as the Mount Rushmore State races toward the final passage of the COS resolution, quickly moving to become the 20th state in history to join the movement.

Less than two weeks after the South Dakota Senate passed SJR 502, the House State Affairs Committee heard public testimony and voted 8-5 in favor of the COS application on Monday morning. Former U.S. Senator and Convention of States Senior Advisor Rick Santorum joined the state grassroots team, delivering a powerful endorsement of the resolution.

“Washington, D.C., needs a boss,” Santorum asserted. “They need someone to be accountable to, and historically, that has been you [the state legislatures].”

“This country is on fire,” he continued. “The house is burning down, and you’re standing across the street, looking at your house burning down. . . . It’s time to cross the street and put the fire out.”

After consideration and debate, the committee voted favorably to advance the application to the full House. If the House passes the resolution, South Dakota will become the 20th state to join the Convention of States’ clarion call to rein in the federal government and restore self-governance to the American people.

“We’ve got three of the four steps complete, and we are so excited,” reacted Regional Director Deanna Becket.

“I have to give kudos to the grassroots who have been working literally for ten years,” acknowledged Convention of States President Mark Meckler. “It’s ten years of incredible grassroots effort, but then it’s also a hero like Rick Santorum coming in and putting the finishing touches on it.”

Once again, we congratulate the South Dakota team for its outstanding success, bringing us one step closer to making history!
