Saturday, September 28th, the North Carolina Convention of States Action Piedmont Region volunteers hosted a petition table at Everybody’s Day festival in Thomasville, North Carolina.
Historically, and for over a century, this award-winning festival has drawn visitors from across the Southeast to enjoy a vibrant mix of arts and crafts, live music, carnival rides, and delicious food, and is the oldest event venue in the state.
Despite the hurricane weather two days before, this year the weather was perfect - with sunny skies adding to the festive atmosphere. Seven dedicated COS volunteers engaged with festivalgoers, discussing government overreach and how an Article V Convention of States is the Constitutional solution as big as the problem.
Volunteers highlighted the potential for North Carolina to become the 20th state to pass the Article V Convention of States Resolution and encouraged attendees to contact their senators to support HJR 235.
Volunteers distributed over 500 COS social media palm cards and collected almost 100 new petitions from event attendees, some from out of state.
The history of the Convention of States resolution in North Carolina has been quite eventful. The North Carolina Senate first passed the resolution in 2017 but it did not get approval from the House during that session. In 2022, the House passed the resolution, but this time the Senate did not approve it.
In 2023, the North Carolina House voted in favor of the resolution again. The Senate has not yet voted on the resolution this session, but still may before the end of 2024.
