How does this extraordinary number of current government workers nationwide relate to the fact that the Amish community in Pennsylvania played an outsized role in the recent federal and state election results?
The answer lies in the January 2024 heavy handed police action and egregious invasion of privacy, carried out by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (a search warrant was issued that brought in 3 PA State Troopers and 7 PA AG Dept. employees), who forcibly entered and conducted an hours-long search of an Amish farm and small business run by The Amos Miller Organic Milk Farm in Bird in the hand, PA.
What!?
The criminal focus by the State government was on a “raw milk trafficking" violation, targeting the Amish owner and his family for daring to sell raw milk to their neighbors.
Talk about government overreach!
Note: In 2016, the FDA had levied this Amish farm with a fine of $300,000 (reduced to $50,000 after appeal). One can surely call this behavior repeated and unwarranted harassment.
When we as a nation have permitted government workers and related regulatory agencies with bureaucratic powers to grow unimpeded, some of these very same public servants may either not have enough serious business on their plate and/or can exhibit attitudes of overbearing top-down control.
This story awakened many both in and outside the Amish community, along with the events surrounding the NY State Animal Welfare police who recently stormed the home of an internet star squirrel and raccoon owner and shortly thereafter euthanized both animals (the infamous "Peanut Story” phenomenon that went viral).
So much for the role of government being one to ensure we live freely and protect us.
News of this latest raw milk travesty in Pennsylvania spread quickly. The Amish may not use cellphones but they do communicate.
Result: Tremendous blowback (90,000+ Amish reside in Pennsylvania), aided by conservative political activists who rallied their support to express their inalienable God-given freedoms were under attack and encouraged this (usually political unengaged) community to vote for smaller less oppressive government policies. Ultimately, the Amish turnout (together with the large Mennonite population) may have made an enormous difference in Pennsylvania’s election results.
Whether you are a religious God-loving person (as the author is) or not, we can all share our admiration for so many virtues to be found in this faith-based remarkable community, dating back to the 18th Century, when they migrated from Europe seeking freedom from persecution.
They are notable for being entirely self-reliant and industrious farmers, devoted to family, healthy in mind, body and spirit, seeking peaceful resolutions to all conflict, hard-working from dawn to dusk, desirous of being left alone as a closely-knit community, never faltering in their generous aid to neighbors in need, skilled carpenters and builders, and embodying Jefferson’s ideal vision of an American independent incorruptible small farmer.
So… beware, all intrusive elected & especially unelected government agency workers, as any potential overreach via excessive force on the general peaceful populace may have consequences that our Founders both foresaw and supported: justifiable resistance to abuses, as assured in our Constitution.
At Convention of States, we offer a peaceful and legal pathway to achieve lasting positive changes by following the precepts within our Constitution, with particular emphasis on Article V, Section two, giving us (We The People) the right to call for a convention to propose amendments to the Constitution. That way, we can retake control of our destiny.
