Pelosi: Democrats must return to D.C. for Speaker vote, can stay home for COVID legislation

Published in Blog on December 16, 2020 by Article V Patriot

Just days after a Senate Democrat admitted to holding up a COVID-19 bill to hurt Trump's reelection chances, Rep. Nancy Pelosi is proving once again that politics matter more than people in D.C.

The Daily Wire is reporting that the Speaker of the House has demanded that her Democratic colleagues return to D.C. to reelect her as Speaker even while discouraging Congress from convening to pass legislation. Pelosi has thus far refused to recall her colleagues to vote on the next round of COVID-19 aid but is "desperate" to make sure Democrats return in January to vote for her, according to the outlet.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy pointed out Pelosi's hypocrisy in an interview with Fox News.

“Pelosi is fine with House Democrats skipping work if the votes are about legislation, but in January she will demand every Democrat show up—in person—to vote for her for Speaker,” McCarthy said. “Her message is clear: her power is more important than anything else."

Reports have been surfacing for days that Pelosi is putting the screws in her colleagues to show up in January and vote for her. It's unclear whether she has enough votes, and votes can only be cast in-person.

“Pelosi and her allies have been ratcheting up their lobbying campaign in recent weeks to ensure House Democrats are in the Capitol that first Sunday in January,” Politico noted over the weekend. “Pelosi has had help from her top deputies, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC), according to several sources familiar with the effort. She and her supporters have also deployed former Obama administration alumni and big donors to help squeeze undecided Democrats, in addition to influential politicians and labor leaders in lawmakers’ home states.”

Meanwhile, Pelosi hasn't asked Democrats to return to D.C. to vote on a bipartisan aid package designed to get Americans through what looks to be a difficult few months. Government-imposed COVID-19 lockdowns have destroyed the livelihoods of countless Americans, and the rise of cases has forced government officials to impose even stricter measures.

We'd like to say that a Republican Speaker of the House would act differently, but we aren't so sure. Politics is king in our nation's capital, and not even a nationwide pandemic can force our "leaders" to put people over politics.

That's why we need an Article V Convention of States. If the last year has taught us anything, it's that nothing will ever change how D.C. operates -- except a Convention of States.

A Convention of States is called and controlled by the states under Article V of the Constitution. At this convention, states can propose constitutional amendments that shrink the size, scope, and jurisdiction of the federal government and return that power to the states and the people. Amendments can also get rid of politicians like Pelosi by imposing term limits, and forcing Congress to be fiscally responsible by mandating a balanced budget and spending caps.

We can't force politicians to care about us. But we can limit the damage they can do and put real power back where it belongs -- with We the People.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
