Next power grab involves declaring gun violence a “public health crisis”

Published in Blog on April 20, 2023 by Catie Robertson

President Biden relinquished emergency powers given to the executive branch at the onset of the pandemic only one week ago, COSA reported on the blog. This act marked the end of a three-year-long excuse for the federal government to dictate every facet of your life.

To no one’s surprise, authorities have already found a new cause worthy of another “state of emergency” and the power that accompanies it.

This time, they claim an epidemic of gun violence. Presumably only resolvable through the total eradication of guns from the citizenry.

Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) suggests the government declare a “public health crisis” in response to gun violence across the nation.

This “public health crisis” would indubitably allow the government to run roughshod over your constitutional rights, just as they did throughout the COVID lockdowns.

Should these congressmen deign to read the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, they might notice that the Founding Fathers wrote no clause allowing the government to abandon its duties in favor of a power grab in the case of an “emergency.”

No emergency allows the government to force its citizens to indefinitely forfeit their rights.

Rep. Matt Gaetz described the impact of so-called public health emergencies well: “It means you're more likely to be locked in your homes, deprived of your freedoms, less healthy, less safe, less secure and less able to live a truly American life.”

Across the states, however, various cities have declared a state of emergency regarding gun violence in their area of jurisdiction.

The state of New York declared such an emergency in 2021, giving their governor the power to “temporarily suspend or modify any statute, local law, ordinance, order, rule or regulation” which “would prevent, hinder, or delay action necessary to cope with the disaster emergency.”

How long before Biden follows suit and declares the second public health emergency in the last three years?

The mission of Convention of States is of tantamount importance for this time in history. If the Second Amendment is to be protected, an Article V convention should be called in order to propose amendments that secure your rights as an individual citizen and restrain an overbearing federal government.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
