Will you liberate your children from the chains of financial slavery? Or will you bind them?
From other parts of the world, we hear tragic tales of parents who were "forced" to sell their children to pay the bills. In India, for example, child labor and child marriage are pervasive “coping mechanisms for families who have fallen into debt and poverty.”
According to a 2013 report, “Millions of Indian children work as slaves in factories, brothels or in the homes of families.” That number appears only to have worsened since the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a grim, unforgivable reality.
No matter how desperate a parent’s situation might be, we can all agree that selling children into slavery is inexcusable. It’s evil. Fortunately, we don’t face those kinds of situations in America.
But what if we’re committing a different kind of crime?
What if we’re selling our kids into a different form of slavery — not out of desperation but out of our abundance?
According to King Solomon’s ancient book of wisdom, “the borrower is slave to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7). Very few people (and even fewer in D.C.) take this lesson seriously anymore. Even as our nation’s debt nears a mind-numbing $37 trillion, Americans have accumulated a record-high $17.5 trillion in personal debt. It's an unsustainable situation.
Proverbs also teaches that a “good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children” (Proverbs 13:22). We’re on track to leave them with over $106,150 in debt per person.
What makes it all worse is that we are enslaving our kids not because we’re impoverished but because we’re addicted to spending. Politicians and consumers alike have been on a spending high for decades.
It’s immoral to expect future generations to pay the price for our lavish excesses, but that’s exactly what we’re doing. We refuse to close our pocketbooks even when we know our descendants will have to pick up the tab.
Fiscal responsibility and personal finances are closely related to preserving the Republic. “Saving Their America” is all about ensuring our progeny continue to enjoy the same privileges and blessings we grew up with. What good does it do if we expend all our energies in the political arena only to saddle our families with crushing monetary obligations? Even as we seek to stave off government tyranny, we must also labor to liberate our children from the chains of financial slavery.
We have a mandate from the millions of patriots before us who sacrificed to safeguard our freedom: now, we must do the same for others. Liberty isn’t a bottomless money box or a blank check; it’s a responsibility. If ever we hope to replenish the American vaults of opportunity, we must begin by unshackling our kids from debt.
