Larry Elder’s Pipe Dream

Published in Blog on January 16, 2023 by Erik Van Geel

Larry Elder has a dream. Oh. Hold on. Let me back up a bit. I started with the assumption that you know who Larry Elder is. If you don’t and you haven’t skipped to the next paragraph yet, please continue reading, but first go cancel your Disney+ subscription, uninstall TikTok, and take ten minutes to ponder what is really important in life.....

Okay, welcome back! Larry Elder is a well-known writer, columnist, and radio talk show host and has been active since the late 80s. In 2021 he ran for Governor of the state of California. His bid was unsuccessful, which by now many Californians undoubtedly regret.

Now why am I talking about Larry Elder? Because as I was browsing through some online news articles, his latest headline caught my eye: “Here’s Why Reining In Gov’t Spending Is Nothing Short Of A Pipe Dream.” In this article, Elder makes a very good point: “I’ve never quite understood why all Republicans do not belong to the Freedom Caucus. If the Republican Party supports low taxes, light regulations, and strong national security, why is a Freedom Caucus even necessary?”

This is more than a catchy quote -- and it is not even tied to political affiliation (regardless of the specific references in the quote). It is something for all Americans to think about because after all, if we are the Land of the Free (which we are), why aren’t we all fighting for our individual and corporate freedoms? Republicans and Democrats and everybody else?

Elder describes entitlement and the unsustainable spending of the Federal Government over the last decades as the main problem we are facing. He says, “Most voters don’t much care about the national debt, budget deficits or whether the federal budget is balanced,” and in his article implies we shouldn’t put our hope in a Republican house either.

And this is where my opinion differs from Larry Elder’s. First, the American people do care about out-of-control Big Government spending. But money is not the main issue. Big Government is. This explains the success we have already observed in the efforts of the Convention of States (COS), which aims to introduce constitutional amendments to:
1. Impose fiscal restraints on the federal government
2. Limit its power and jurisdiction, and
3. Impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress

This COS grassroots movement currently has over 5 million supporters and 230,000 volunteers. Thanks to their efforts, the Convention of States application has already passed in 19 states, and legislative action is underway in 11 more!

Secondly, we should not put our hope in politicians, certainly not in a big federal government or their globalist allies at the IMF, WEF, and United Nations. Instead, we need to remember who we are. Let’s put our trust in God first, then take action and trust “We the People” to govern ourselves again.

A pipe dream? Maybe to some, but not to us here at Convention of States. Remember, “if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20)

Change does not start with politicians. It starts with you and me. We believe it will happen. So I invite you to sign our petition – a very small, but very impactful step.

After you, Mr. Elder.
