I relearned recently in a Louisiana Online Conference Call that the United States of America is NOT a DEMOCRACY. We are a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC. A little background seems in order to set the stage.

Democracy In a pure democracy one person equals one vote, there is no constitutional document, often the majority rules and the minority have few recourses.
Constitutional Republic

A form of government in which officials are elected by citizens to lead them as directed by their country’s constitution.

A country is considered a constitutional republic if:

  • It has a constitution limiting the government’s power.
  • Citizens choose their own heads of state and other governmental officials.

One of the key discriminators in a Constitutional Republic is ‘a constitution limiting the government’s power.’ And this characteristic brings me to the Convention of States (COS) Article V convention where we are focused on:

1.   Term Limits

2.   Fiscal Restraints on the Federal Government

3.   Limits to the Power and Jurisdiction of the Federal Government

At Convention of States we are a grassroots organization, powered by volunteers, focused on the three areas shown above and determined to achieve an Article V amendment convention. As volunteers, we work at our individual ‘speeds’ and within personally set time commitments to realize our goal.

In my opinion you can never have too many volunteers. So, this is a shameless call for more volunteers. All y’all, this is such important work; this is citizenship in action and the work can be ever so satisfying.

So, the civics lesson as shown in the table above is there to reaffirm that when a Constitutional Republic has involved, informed and enthusiastic citizens, our government works best. Our Founders were extraordinary, ordinary folks, who foresaw the need for checks and balances and put many of those into the U.S. Constitution.

Go read the text of Article V – it is a short, easy read: https://conventionofstates.com/article-v-of-the-u-s-constitution  Here you will find how we the people do, in fact, have the power to call for an amendment convention. The COS amendment petition has 3 identified objectives and that is what we focus on 1) term limits, 2) fiscal restraints and 3) limiting the power of the Federal government.

Please consider answering the call to become involved in getting the job done and aiding the call for an Article V amendment convention.
