Jenna Ellis calls Article V the ‘perfect solution’ to a system run by spineless ‘political mercenaries’

Published in Blog on June 26, 2023 by Brianna Kraemer

The people inside the Washington bureaucracy are not genuinely focused on solutions that matter to the American people, Jenna Ellis asserted on a recent episode of COS Live.

As a constitutional attorney and a former senior legal advisor to President Donald Trump, Ellis experienced the Washington swamp first-hand, explaining it as “even worse than anyone has possibly described.”

The problem is that Washington has become a massive unelected bureaucracy, she explained. Whether it’s the elected government officials or the staffers within Congress and the executive agencies, the collective whole has resulted in an out-of-control government.

“These people that just move around in various offices, they’re political mercenaries, and so you know, they'll go and advocate for one thing one day, and then the complete opposite the next day just because of the paycheck,” Ellis said. “And so the solution of bringing this back to the state legislatures really is the only way that I see that this can possibly be overcome.”

That’s just the nature of how D.C. operates, and the Founders warned against this massive power build-up, as we’re experiencing today. The growing Washington myopic power has tried purposefully to say to states, ‘We want to have you send more and more and more of your sovereignty to the federal government,’ Ellis said.

As a supporter of Article V, Ellis said if the Founding Fathers “specifically provided this mechanism by which to amend our U.S. Constitution, then we should trust that, because we've used the other way in Article V 27 times in our nation's history.”

Article V has been greatly overlooked, and she believes it's actually a mistake that we've never used this mechanism in America's history. If we don't actually exercise the power that is given to us, then what are We the People doing?

She concluded that if we’re complaining about our nation’s trajectory, every individual must also take action in order to find a solution.

“Well, we are very blessed that the founders provided the perfect solution.”

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
