In this Volunteer Spotlight the California Team presents one if its strongest contributors of time, talent and devotion, District Captain, Glenn Clayton of Posey, California. Glenn Clayton serves as District Captain in two California State Assembly Districts, District 26 in Tulare County and District 34 in Kern County. These large Central Valley districts feature open land, wide highways, farms, suburbs, industry, and colleges. |
But other, glaring features exist in the Central Valley: increasing crime, mismanagement of natural resources and a lack of effective problem-solving. Clayton believes these critical situations can be blamed on abuse of power at the Federal level.
“Federal government respect of the states as independent republican governments has eroded drastically,” Clayton explained. “We need some strong, powerful amendments that return power to the States.”
“With Article Five of the Constitution, the States can force the Federal Government back to limited, enumerated powers,” he stated. “This is why I joined the historic Convention of States effort.”
Through direct community outreach, Clayton works to increase support for the Convention of States in his districts. He and his volunteer teams gather signatures at Gun Shows, Fairs, wherever he can find gatherings of liberty-minded neighbors. He also works from home, contacting new petition signers by phone and email, thanking them, and asking them to become active volunteers. |
“Then I invite them to work with me, and our local legislators, to make a difference in our country,” Clayton said.
Clayton places a high value on mentoring others, taking time to get to know each person and identify ways to support, teach and provide experiences for them, he described. His latest project was "Summer Legislator Contact."
Clayton asked his volunteers to contact their State Assembly and Senate members by phone, email, hand-written letters, or in-person visit. He asked that these contacts be made monthly through the summer. He was seeking measurable results over time. Clayton and team member Rick Mangini made in-person visits to the legislators’ offices.
“The staffers said things like, "I have spoken to the senator about you" or, "I have been noticing your mail." With this feedback, Clayton and his volunteers know they are building positive relationships in their districts.
“My team and I have received several face-to-face interactions with Assembly Member Devon Mathis in the last 5-7 years,” Glenn stated. “It is my hope that Mathis, along with some other legislators, will sponsor the Convention of States resolution and take it to completion.”
