A familiar proposed socialist illusion is cradle-to-grave financial support. Free childcare, free education, free healthcare, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security – all free? The infrastructure bill will cost nothing. Really?
Where does the money come from? Most people work and pay taxes. You, the people, are the source of funding for our entitlement programs. The money does not only come from the wealthy 1% or from huge corporations. The average citizens’ taxes also pay for these services and programs.
America’s unique self-governing history demonstrates that we need a strong middle class because that leads to greater ingenuity, prosperity, and civic unity. The more independent people there are running their own lives and making their own decisions, the less that society depends on elite experts’ decision-making and government handouts.
Dependency on the government comes with a price – submission. If a state or university program wants federal money, that institution gives up authority to make its own choices. If a hospital wants federal COVID relief funds, it must classify patients according to federal rules.
Federal bureaucrats making rules, controlling finances, and making states beg for their money back with strings attached are all examples of government overreach. Those federal dollars come from your taxes.
Help Is On the Way
As a republic, the United States was organized as independent, sovereign states with a federal structure for support on specific national issues. The U.S. Constitution enumerates the limited powers and responsibilities of a federal government. Over the last two hundred years, state sovereignty has lost ground to federal usurpation of powers.
Article V of the Constitution provides a path for the governed people to help their elected officials follow the intentions of our founding fathers. If We the People believe that changes are in order, we may propose a convention of states to reaffirm our guiding principles.
It is a precious gift that in this country citizens may legally and peacefully influence the process of self-governing. For example, COS volunteers from a passed state like Florida may help states like Virginia or Iowa that are in the process of passing a resolution.
Seventeen states have already passed a resolution to propose a Convention of States, but thirty-four states are needed to present the proposal to Congress. Our COS work is to educate each other and our elected officials on the benefits of passage of an Article V resolution.
During the Convention, specific amendments will be debated. COS proposes amendments related to fiscal responsibility, term limits for officials, and reducing the power and jurisdiction of the federal government.
