Groundbreaking polling from the non-partisan Peter G. Peterson Foundation shows swing state voters overwhelmingly support the next president of the United States to curb the national debt. They also believe both sides should articulate how they plan to address the nation's $34 trillion debt.
Moreover, 88% of voters say the candidates should prioritize limiting the federal debt, even if that means cutting back on government spending in other areas.
“More than 9-in-10 voters across seven key states — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — say it’s important for candidates to have a plan for the debt,” the October 2024 survey states. “Additionally, 3-in-4 voters in these battleground states say they want candidates to talk more about the debt and their plans to address it – outpacing the percentages of voters who say the same for other election issues including immigration, abortion, climate change and foreign policy.”
“The national debt is a critical campaign issue for voters in the decisive swing states,” said Michael A. Peterson, CEO of the Peterson Foundation. “Not only do these key voters overwhelmingly want to hear candidates put forward a plan, [but they also] connect America’s fiscal outlook to key economic priorities including reducing inflation, lowering interest rates, and protecting programs like Medicare and Social Security.”

With Election Day now only one week away, both campaigns seek to target the battleground states, making their final push for undecided voters to cast their ballots. With the races locked in a virtual dead heat, speaking out about the federal debt could be the topic that pushes one candidate over the edge. Rather than shying away from this all-important subject, the candidates would be wise to formulate and express comprehensive plans for paying off — or, at least, chipping away at — the national debt.
This poll proves fiscal responsibility — one of Convention of States’ three subject areas — is not an outdated or secondary concern: it’s a top priority for millions of voters on both sides of the aisle.
The American people perceive that the national debt is crippling our county and enslaving our children. Now, the question is, Does Washington?
Will the federal government do anything about this massive problem? Or will they continue to fuel our nation’s impending financial crisis?
More than 90% of voters in the swing states demand a response to the national debt. We can give them that through an Article V convention.
