At a campaign event on Sunday for Donald Trump at Madison Square Garden, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk predicted that he could cut “at least $2 trillion” from “wasted” government spending.
Previously, Musk and Trump have expressed interest in appointing the “X” owner to head a government efficiency commission to audit the federal government. Musk, who Trump called “the greatest cutter,” announced he would be willing to serve in the position with “no pay, no title, no recognition.”
“[A]t the end of the day, you’re being taxed,” he said at the event on Sunday. “You’re being taxed. All government spending is taxation. So whether it’s direct taxation or all government spending — either it becomes inflation, or it’s direct taxation — your money is being wasted, and the Department of Government Efficiency is going to fix that.”

As Convention of States reported last week, the federal government added over $473 billion to the national debt over the first three weeks of October alone. As the debt approaches a startling $36 trillion, families have begun to worry about whether their children and grandchildren will enjoy a future of financial freedom or slavery in America.
According to polling from the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, more than 90% of voters in swing states — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — “say it’s important for candidates to have a plan for the debt.” Nearly 90% (87% for Vice President Kamala Harris, 89% for Trump) want the candidates to prioritize addressing the debt.
“The national debt is a critical campaign issue for voters in the decisive swing states,” noted Peterson Foundation CEO Michael A. Peterson. “Not only do these key voters overwhelmingly want to hear candidates put forward a plan, [but they also] connect America’s fiscal outlook to key economic priorities including reducing inflation, lowering interest rates, and protecting programs like Medicare and Social Security.”
“We’re going to get the government off your back and out of your pocketbook,” Musk vowed in his address at Madison Square Garden.

Harris’s campaign has also tackled financial freedom, highlighting the bipartisan appeal of the topic.
“[Harris and her running mate, Governor Tim Walz] know that prices are still too high for middle-class families, which is why their top economic priorities will be lowering the costs of everyday needs like health care, housing and groceries and cutting taxes for more than 100 million working and middle-class Americans,” the vice president’s team claimed.
Unfortunately, multiple economists have predicted that neither candidate can (or will) cut the debt or limit government spending. We shouldn’t be surprised. We have entrusted this crucial issue to elected federal officials for decades — to no avail. It’s time to take matters into our own hands. With an Article V convention, the American people can rein in federal spending, power, and terms of office and ensure a future of financial freedom from their posterity.
