Last week, the South Carolina Convention of States Action Team embarked on a memorable journey to Columbia, the epicenter of South Carolina's political landscape. Our presence spoke volumes about the influence and respect COS commands among our local politicians.
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by House Representative Bill Taylor who was eager to get pictures with us on the capital steps.
Our day in the capital began with greetings from a flurry of legislators ready for conversation and photos. It was evident that word of COS's presence in the lobby had spread when legislators started coming out of the chamber to engage with our group. The enthusiastic reception underscored the significance of our mission and spoke volumes about the impact our organization has on shaping political discussion.
Throughout the day, we seized every opportunity to connect with legislators, presenting them with thank you cards and bookmarks listing the number of petition signers in their districts who support an Article V convention of the states. Our engagement extended beyond mere conversations as we captured memorable moments with representatives from various districts, solidifying our commitment to staying active and visible in our state.
As the day progressed, conversation centered around the 2024 legislative bills we are in support of, such as Free Speech on Campus (H.3467), Transparency and Integrity in Education Act (H.3728), and the Adoption and Foster Care Protection Act (H.3801).
We proudly urged legislators to co-sponsor our proposal for the legislation encapsulated in House Bills 4625 and 4626, which provide for the selection and oversight of commissioners to an Article V Convention and establish offenses and penalties if they fail to faithfully fulfill their duties. These resolutions create important frameworks for our state's participation in the convention process.
The highlight of our day came when we were graciously recognized by Senator Michael Johnson during the Senate session. Standing tall on the balcony, we were acknowledged for our dedication to the cause, receiving waves and applause from all Senate members. It was a moment of pride and validation for our relentless efforts.
When the day drew to a close, it was evident that our efforts had made a significant impact. We left Columbia with renewed vigor, knowing that our grassroots movement continues to shape the political landscape of South Carolina.
The final results of our day - House Bills 4625 & 4626 added thirteen additional sponsors.
As we departed Columbia, lifted by the day's successes, we were reminded of the power of grassroots activism in effecting meaningful change. The South Carolina Action Team remains resolute in our mission to uphold the principles of liberty and governance by the people, for the people. Together, we will continue to advocate for a brighter future for our great state and nation.
