The Florida Constitutional Review Commission shows its partisan side

Published in Blog on March 21, 2018 by Eugene L Cloud

Some members of the Florida Constitutional Review Commission tried to take advantage of the events at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to impose gun control and limitations in the Florida Constitution. Their efforts were ruled out of order on March 21, 2018.

Previously a proposal (P 0003) was filed by Commissioner Roberto Martinez and supported by Commissioners Belinda Keiser and Bob Solari, that sought to delete limitations on ownership of real property.  Certainly, an understandable and maybe even an acceptable proposal.

However, after the tragedy in South Florida amendments to this proposal (P 0003) were filed. Commissioner Martinez proposed an amendment to the Florida Constitution involving gun control measures and prohibitions that had nothing to do with his original proposal. He filed a further revision later that same day.

Commissioner Chris Smith proposed amendments to Martinez amendments to ban “assault rifles.”

Commissioner Hank Coxe also proposed an amendment to insert limitations and prohibitions related to types of guns, accessories, and waiting periods. Coxe’s proposal was supported by Commissioners Sherry Plymale, Arthenia Joyner, and Frank Kruppenbacker.

The original objective of proposal P 0003 was cast aside when these commissioners thought they saw an opportunity to limit Second Amendment rights in Florida.

All Florida citizens must watch the CRC and educate themselves on any constitutional amendment proposals that are placed on the November ballot. In a press release, the commission announced that 25 proposals have been committed to the Style and Drafting Committee.

This is your government. Pay attention.

The Public Safety issues were dealt with by the Florida Legislature in CS/SB 7026 Public Safety by statute on March 9, 2018.
