Do you have the stamina for another presidential election?

Published in Blog on August 01, 2023 by Robin Riddell

The charade that is the 2024 national election is unfolding. You can’t avoid it.

A growing field of Republican candidates is lining up to unseat the guy in The White House. The media is out in full force parading the Challengers across our screens with words that reveal their own personal bias. We will hear those words reverberate in the discussions, debates, and opinions shared at work, at community meetings, in bars, and at home about who is the best/worst/most qualified/underqualified candidate for president.

So far, the Republicans are lining up against the Democrats. The Democrats are lining up behind the guy in The White House. It’s Us Vs. Them…right?

Let election season begin!

<Yawn>

Will the leadership change parties? Maybe yes. Maybe not.

Does it really matter?

Of course, it does.

Do I truly believe that putting a certain party in The White House is going to make a difference in the problems we face today?

Maybe.

What doesn’t seem to change is the way our government leaders respond to We the People.

Both Republicans and Democrats have centralized the power in Washington D. C. through long careers with seemingly no accountability while we toil away as faithful servants showing up once every four years to rubber stamp their “public service.”

This is not at all American! We are supposed to have a government for, by, and about the people; not an unaccountable political ruling class.

The out-of-control spending is unsustainable, yet they continue to spend, spend, spend. Every child born today in America is born into debt slavery. Every one of us and those newborn babies owes $97,000 of the
national debt and it’s growing! That’s wrong at every level!

This isn’t a Republican or a Democrat problem. This is a structural problem.

It’s way past time that we have term limits for the three branches of government. They are never going to take this up themselves. It’s up to the People to take this on. We can, with an Article V convention.

It’s time to hold Washington D.C. accountable – way beyond electing a president.

It’s easy to think that because we get our favorite candidate elected that we’ve done our part for democracy. That’s not enough. It might even be a dangerous delusion.

Well over 200 years ago the Founders foresaw a day when the government might well ignore the will of the people. They knew what it was like to live under the oppression of a ruling class, so they gave us a mechanism to counteract such a situation.

The Founders empowered The People with a role in the running of our government in Article V of the Constitution. While we are used to D.C. passing laws and setting rules for all of us, this little-known mechanism gives us a way to repair some of the structural problems we have today.

Do we, the American People, have what it takes to rein in our government?

It is hard work and it takes time.

There are setbacks and, sadly, another presidential election isn’t going to fix it.

Should elections really be about the Us Vs. Them drama that the mainstream media plays out for the world to see every day?

I believe it is time we find common ground.

While you watch the 2024 election drama unfold, re-examine your most closely held beliefs and measure them against what each candidate says and does. Ignore their words and look at their actions. Tune out
the media and ask your own questions. Do your own research. Are they who they say they are?

Does your favorite candidate believe that Americans are capable of self-governance?

Do we really understand what self-governance means anymore?

Does America really represent the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave anymore?

Have we traded freedom for security?

Do we have a clear understanding of what freedom means?

I believe it is time that we start having these discussions.

Our common ground is Article V of the Constitution. If you believe that our country has strayed far from its original values of self-governance and you'd like to see change, sign the petition and become a volunteer.

Stop the Us Vs. Them war of words. We are strongest when we work together.
