Debt Ceiling merely postponed for future generations

Published in Blog on June 07, 2023 by William Siwek

President Biden is taking his victory lap and Congress is rejoicing in its "bipartisan" achievement to pass the Fiscal Responsibility (?) Act of 2023.

Except it’s really a “unipartisan” achievement after all. The same DC politicians who usually get together, got together once again to kick the can down the road.

You see the threatened “US default” has not been eliminated --- it has just been postponed.

Our leaders in DC think they can just keep doing the same thing over and over and not get the same results. (Say, isn’t that the definition of insanity?)

The new bill simply suspends the debt ceiling until 1/1/2025 and provides little in the way of real spending controls until then.

The fact is, the only thing being reduced is the rate of the increase. We are still looking at year-by-year deficits and thus an ever climbing national debt.

As for protecting the “full faith and credit of the United States”, I’m pretty sure that has already been squandered by generations of politicians.

No wonder that many foreign governments are now looking to conduct their trading in currencies other than the US dollar. They don’t trust us anymore. Nor do I.

Let’s face it, when you look at the numbers we are flat out BUSTED!

And I’m sorry to say so too are your kids and grandkids.

The debt problem will never be solved until we have an actual balanced budget amendment to the Constitution that means exactly what it says. If you spend more money than you take in as revenues, then you can’t claim to balance the budget.

The only solution as big as the problem is an Article V Convention of States. One of the three pillars of our movement is to propose (and then ratify) a Balanced Budget Amendment.

We have 19 of the 34 states on board to call the convention. We need 15 more (I’m looking at you Virginia) to pass the resolution.

Time for the Virginia legislators to stop hiding in fear.

Then the work of restoring government back to “We the People” can really begin.

The time to act is now.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
