Like Rip Van Winkle, we've fallen asleep and finally awakened to see, in utter disbelief, our runaway government, nearly 40 Trillion Dollars in debt ($40,000,0000,000,000) - and chronically unable to police itself.

All 13 original sovereign states united to form the federal government; they (we) have gradually relinquished those powers to that central authority, which has evolved into our now recklessly spendthrift Leviathan of a federal government. And the Framers were terribly worried this event might happen!
They were clairvoyant. Washington DC will never rein itself in, without our actively pressuring them to do so.
