On Saturday, April 21, Mr. Alvin Jackson of the John Wesley Center for Constitutional Studies conducted a Constitutional Literacy seminar, hosted by the Convention of States Virginia team in the Shenandoah Region.
Mr. Jackson explained the federal Constitution from the Framers’ viewpoint, especially their purpose to enumerate and constrain federal power.
He aptly showed how the present-day Constitution has strayed from its pocket size to the more than 2,000 pages from which our federal government now operates.
Since the original four presidential cabinets, we have exploded the number and expanded the power of Washington, D.C.
Not only has the Supreme Court overstepped its bounds (originally held in the basement of the Capitol), but the executive branch has reached beyond the plan of the Founding Fathers since Abraham Lincoln.
Article I contains a total of 173 lines with 109 lines pertaining to the house of the people (Congress), 47 lines to the executive branch, and 17 lines to the Court. We have gone far astray from the original intent of the Framers.
Chris Walker (State Director), Dennis Denton (Grassroots Coordinator), and Duane Landry (Shenandoah Regional Captain) led a robust session of questions and answers, which spurred several to commit themselves to volunteering with COS Virginia to help restore the checks and balances in the federal leviathan.
