The Convention of States organization topped 2.5 million petition signers over the weekend, hitting an unprecedented milestone in the Article V movement.
Grassroots teams have been racing to reach the 2.5 million mark for months. Over the weekend, COS Illinois reached the accomplishment, and Samuel from Missouri became the 2.5 millionth signer at the Illinois State Fair.
"Our team works relentlessly to share the COS message and enlist others in this great Grassroots Army," declared MO Regional Director Joyce Berry. "When you wonder what impact you will have, the secret is we often don't know of the effect that we have until after the fact, so keep up the great work and know that you are making a huge difference!"
Samuel signed the COS petition thanks to IL COS activist Richard Burns, who helped the movement break its long-anticipated achievement. Illinois Regional Director Michael Arnold said that Burns made the 65-minute drive to Springfield, IL to work his first event, where he unknowingly captured the 2,500,000 signer. He got involved with COS to assist in restoring a freedom-loving attitude amongst the general populace embracing the three goals of the organization.
Burns said he was encouraged by the support and enthusiasm of the fairgoers, who were mostly from Illinois and Missouri, for the COS movement.
"My sense was that many people were thankful something is being done by someone to bring the government back to a government for the people," Burns commented, noting the pleasant interaction and discussions with the other COS volunteers
The achievement comes as the movement celebrates its 10th anniversary, which Mark Meckler and Michael Farris highlighted on Sunday night.
COS teams are gaining an enormous number of petition signers at summer festivals, fairs, and other events. The Iowa team obtained over 650 new signers, and with the Illinois team's new iPad program, they acquired a record of 377 signatures in just one day. Other COS teams have set up booths at county fairs in Colorado, Kansas, Ohio, Wyoming, and more.
COS is made up of grassroots teams in every state across the nation who are fed up with how the federal government operates. Calling an Article V convention to address the problems in Washington requires relationship-building with state legislators and involvement in local politics. Citizen activists are making a real impact in every community, and we couldn't be more excited to see the COS movement advance.
