The Convention of States Maryland team is excited to announce the third annual Student Essay Contest!
One of COS Action's strengths is encouraging citizens to educate themselves on America's founding, and this extends to our young citizens as well! Unless we pass the torch of freedom to the next generation, America will be extinguished.
“The best means of forming a manly, virtuous, and happy people will be found in the right education of youth. Without this foundation, every other means, in my opinion, must fail.” -George Washington-
2023 COS Maryland Annual Essay Contest
Maryland students, currently in grades 6 through 12 are eligible. We ask that they submit an 800-1000 word essay that answers one of the following three questions:
- Why are term limits important, and what potential impact would term limits for elected and appointed positions have in government?
- What do you think it means to be a citizen activist, and why is participation in our government so important?
- What is Federalism and why did the Founders and Framers of our system of government design a system of Federalism for America?
In keeping with our advocacy of self-governance, your essay may be submitted in either written or video format. YOU DECIDE!
The essay deadline is Friday, December 1st. Please submit essays to Christine Stassen at: chrisstassen@comcast.net
Essays will include: student's first and last name, grade, school name (if applicable), and address.

The winner will be announced during a team luncheon and invited to present their essay to the COS volunteer team and legislator supporters. They will also be invited to join the COS team for testifying during the 2024 legislative session.
The winning essayist for this State Level Award will also be invited to attend a COS Action Maryland video conference where he or she will be congratulated by COS Action founder and president, Mark Meckler. Finally, the winning essay will also be published on the COS Action Blog site.
Our youth hold the keys to the future, and it is more important than ever to empower our young people to learn about their government.
