A volunteer's perspective on California Lobby Day 2020

Published in Blog on February 10, 2020 by John James

On Wednesday, January 29, volunteers from throughout California traveled to Sacramento to show support for Convention of States.

It was a bitterly cold morning, but that did not freeze the enthusiasm. The team started gathering before 9:00 a.m. We heard inspiring words from Ginny Rapini and Robert Kelly of the national team.

Personally, I was excited to see the legislative chambers and meeting personally with my legislators. One highlight of the day was meeting with Senator John Moorlach from Orange County.

Senator Moorlach, while running between the floor and his office, was able to spend about 15 minutes with our team to discuss the Convention of States resolution. We were able to introduce the idea of fiscal limits, term limits, and returning decisions to the local level.

He has a great sense of humor. While discussing the need for the Convention of States, I mentioned the $23 trillion in debt and the nearly $200 trillion in unfunded liabilities. Senator Moorlach quipped, “Well, that’s only the federal government.”

In reality he knows about the significant fiscal problems that California faces as well.

Our team--with the help of Robert Kelly, Ginny Rapini, and Joanne Martin--were able to talk with every legislative office. While a few support (and some oppose) our mission of reducing the control of the federal government, most of the legislators were interested and possibly ready to support COS in the future.

The biggest feedback we received was from our handwritten letters.

At every office, the legislator and their staff took our team more serious when we presented them with handwritten letters. This feedback reinforced what we have been hearing from throughout the country: taking the time to write about your support for Convention of States makes a profound impact.

What’s next? I am excited and invigorated for Convention of States. There is so much potential in California. Contrary to common belief, California can pass this resolution.

Recently, I watched the new film Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words. In this movie, Justice Thomas tells the story of his grandfather working and telling him, “Ole Man Can’t is dead. I helped bury him out back.”

California is not a lost cause. Lobby Day 2020 was a great reminder that we can pass the COS resolution, we can retreat from the big government central planning and the reckless spending of career politicians.

That requires individual patriots like you standing up for liberty!
