Brett's Blog Archive - Monday, November 29, 2021: The Umbrella Problem

Published in Blog on December 01, 2021 by Brett Sterley, State Director, Convention of States Missouri

Two weeks to flatten the curve to 20 months of insanity. Masks on, masks off. Jabs for jobs. The education of children is none of the parents’ business. Open borders, off limits elections. These problems are all symptoms of an umbrella problem: government overreach.

What we need is an umbrella solution. Oh, wait! We have one and it was gifted to us by the framers of the Constitution. Article V gives the states both the right and a defined process to call a convention of the states to propose amendments to the Constitution. They understood government overreach because they too lived it. Their response to that overreach was to sign the Declaration of Independence and to take on the greatest military of the age at great cost to many.

Eleven years later the building now known as Independence Hall was once again filled with debate. Incidentally, George Mason stood up two days before the meeting was adjourned and brought up the possibility that the Congress about to be created might one day become a problem in need of a cure. He asked a rhetorical question, "Are we so naive as to believe that if the federal government becomes tyrannical it will propose amendments to restrain its own tyranny?"

Where we can as individuals we need to work on the ‘symptom problems’ so that we can push back as free, liberty-minded, self-governing people and remind the power-hungry and professional politicians that their days are numbered. But we also need to work towards solving the ‘umbrella problem.’ The federal government was created by the states and should be subject to them and we have the means to correct this flaw in our government and the duty to act.

Push back individually in the way which fits your personality and your circumstances. But also work towards a future where the federal government is returned to its constitutional role. What can you do?

  • Educate yourself about your government.
  • Volunteer with the Convention of States or any other organization involved in protecting liberty.
  • Live as a free, liberty-minded, self-governing person and your life and actions will be the best advertisement of what we want and plan for our children and their descendants.

What can the Convention of States Missouri team do? We are tasked with helping become a member of the strongest, largest group of grassroots activists in history. Watch for regular emails from our team with information about upcoming events, legislation related to our project and sources of education. To clarify our project: our goal is to get a convention of the states in motion; our mission is education.

To steal a page from Thomas Jefferson’s book and to amend it slightly: When tyranny becomes law, activism becomes duty.

In liberty,

Brett
