Convention of States interviewed Billy Prempeh, founder of Revive America, on April 22nd. Revive America is a growing, grassroots organization whose goal is to get high quality constitutional candidates elected to local political positions. Billy stressed that everything starts at the local level and if you want to make a difference, you need to begin there.
While the goals of Revive America are multi-faceted, Billy focused on getting people involved in their local government as a means to change the system. In my opinion, the most important thing that Billy stressed was the ordinary person can run for office and make a difference. You don’t need to be someone special– you just need to care about this country and preserving our constitutional rights.
However, for people to make a difference, they need to know what to do. Unfortunately, most people are ignorant of this process, and the county government provides little support. That is where Revive America comes in: to fill that need.
Revive America educates and informs people about how the local government works and why it is important to get involved. For those people who want to get involved and run for office, Revive America helps them through the petition process, dealing with the Board of Elections and getting them on ballots. Revive America also supports them through marketing and getting their message out so they can be elected and help take back this country.
There are many local positions where people can get involved. For example, local Boards of Education, Board of Chosen Freeholders, and County Committees, just to name a few. Many seats stay vacant because people are unaware of them.
The easier way to start getting involved in local politics is to attend city or township council meetings. You can do this in person, but many of them are also broadcasted. Find out what is going on in your city and what the problems are. If you see a problem that you think you can help fix, get involved. If you see a candidate who supports your views, get involved with getting them elected. There are so many opportunities– people just need to be aware of what they are.
Just like a strong house is built on a strong foundation, an effective constitutional government is built on electing people at the lowest level with strong constitutional values. This creates a ripple effect.
