Washington’s Tiny Army Crossed the Delaware for Amazing Battle Outcomes
After the escape from Brooklyn Heights in the fog, the Continental army of only 2000 later crossed the Delaware River on Christmas Day in a blizzard. The men were discouraged and ready to quit and go home, but the ability of Washington to inspire them to continue under discouraging conditions was key.
Guerrilla tactics, typical of the army, led to victory at Trenton. That win renewed their determination to defeat the British. This was followed by a maneuver behind British troops at Princeton in which Washington rode ahead of his troops. He was in the middle of the firing from both sides but survived.
