A Revolutionary Success: Tavern Tour Kickoff

Published in Uncategorized on November 01, 2023 by Brian Baker

History enthusiasts and patriots gathered at the iconic Griswold Inn in Essex, Connecticut, for an unforgettable Revolutionary Tavern Tour – the kickoff event to celebrate our American heritage and the spirit that fueled our nation’s independence.

The sold-out crowd was enthusiastic and inspired by the tavern’s ambiance with original wood beams, stone fireplaces, and numerous artifacts as we embarked on a journey through our American Revolutionary past. The “Gris,” which opened its doors in 1776, is arguably the oldest continuously operating inn in America.

Throughout the evening the audience was encouraged to join the Convention of States (COS) grassroots movement and help uphold and strengthen the original intent and spirit of our U.S. Constitution.

Karen Hesse, CT-COS District Captain, who hosted the event, shared the inspiration behind the Revolutionary Tavern Tour concept—driven by Adrian Covert’s book, Taverns of the American Revolution. As a new COS district captain, Hesse is a powerful advocate for grassroots organizations like the Convention of States. She said this is how she “found her voice” and encouraged others to find their voices by getting involved with COS.

Maureen Zollo, CT-COS State Director, enlightened us with the purpose and potential of COS, encouraging participation to build momentum in Connecticut. She explained how Article V of the U.S. Constitution provides a legitimate and peaceful approach to rein in the federal government and return political power back to the states. She championed COS by entreating the attendees to learn more by visiting the Convention of States website where they can watch videos, read articles, and ultimately find their way to take action, contribute, and support the COS mission.

A Place For Conversation

The Griswold Inn’s owner -- Geoffrey Paul -- followed by unfurling the rich history of this landmark tavern with tales of its origins as a destination for shipbuilders and seafarers and gave numerous examples of how the tavern functioned as the “Internet of colonial times” where strangers gathered to share the latest news and gossip that often stirred political debate. This strong sense of community that began in 1776 still resonates within its walls today.

Richard Legg, adorned in full colonial military regalia, brought history alive, recounting the heroic events of Concord and Lexington, MA. He recounted how brave Americans thwarted the efforts of the superior British forces to squash their fledgling Massachusetts colony by standing their ground at Breed's Hill and Bunker Hill in Boston.  His words echoed the resilient spirit of our forebears, urging us to “get off the fence” and uphold their legacy by joining a renewed call for liberty. Legg is CT-COS Coalitions Director.

COS Volunteer Bill Guiffredos concluded the event with eloquent remarks filled with providential wisdom, reminding us of our divine rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” He also emphasized the return to our founding ideals by defending and upholding the words enshrined within our founding documents that repeatedly appeal to God Almighty, the Creator and Sustainer of the new Republic.

Imbued by a sense of duty, history, and a passionate community, the Revolutionary Tavern Tour’s kickoff was a rousing triumph! Stay tuned for the announcement of the next inspiring event on this momentous journey.
