A Rare DC Politician/Kept his word on Term Limits

Published in Blog on January 19, 2025 by John A Luce

Senator Tom Coburn would be elated to learn how Convention of States Action is approaching a most important milestone: The 20th State to ratify our Resolution calling for an Article V Convention.
A retired obstetrician, Tom was a tireless champion and most effective supporter of Convention of States; he sadly passed away from cancer in 2023.
Elected to the US house of Representatives in 1994 representing Oklahoma, Tom Coburn later became an outspoken proponent calling for an Article V Convention of States. We owe him a debt of gratitude and would not have progressed as far as we have today without him.
Recognized as a fiscally conservative leader of great moral rectitude, he consistently warned our nation about excessive spending and would be even more horrified at what we have seen since his passing - an even more bloated and vastly indebted federal government - clearly rudderless while operating without any brakes.
Tom was respected by virtually all his peers regardless of party, and developed a close mutual friendship with Barak Obama, despite their notable differences on almost every issue.
He also kept his word with respect to his desire to impose term limits on career politicians, unlike others who may have supported one position while finding reasons to exempt themselves from that restriction.
After being re-elected twice, Rep. Coburn upheld his campaign promise to serve no more than three consecutive terms and did not seek re-election in 2000.
In 2004, Tom completed a successful run for the United States Senate. He was re-elected to a second Senate term in 2010 while he honored his pledge not to seek a third term in 2016.
His fiscal conservative positions blocked so many bills in the Senate that he was known as “Dr. No”.
As he was most eloquent and passionately committed to saving our republic, it is best to read his own words.
Here is an excerpt from an article he published in The Washington Times:
By Tom Coburn - Tuesday, February 24, 2015
OPINION:
Throughout my time in Washington, it was my goal to constrain the scope and size of our federal government to that which our Founders intended. There were successes along the way, of course, but the federal behemoth continues to grow almost unabated year after year, election cycle after election cycle.
The reason for this is surprisingly simple: It is human nature to attempt to collect as much power and control as possible, and in few places is that more evident than in Washington, D.C.
Our national soul is being corrupted by Washington’s unhindered and unconstitutional overreach.
Our Founders anticipated the federal government might get out of control at some point, and they gave us a constitutional mechanism to rein it in. It’s called a Convention of the States, outlined in Article V of the Constitution.
Too many in Washington have, unfortunately, have forgotten they work for the American people, and that needs to change if America is going to remain a strong, free and prosperous nation. As it now stands, we are a nation mired in massive and growing debt, out-of-control regulation, high taxes and less freedom. Washington cannot and will not fix this — only the American people have the will and power to put America back together.
Although I am a proud conservative, this is not a partisan issue. Politicians and bureaucracies in Washington, D.C. will never voluntarily relinquish meaningful power — no matter who is elected.
If there is one thing Americans have always agreed on it’s that government functions best when decisions are made closest to the people. Only through a Convention of States may the clear, unfettered voice of the people be heard and overreaching government be reined in."
At Convention of States Action, we offer peaceful and legal solutions to our gravest national ills, firmly embedded within Article V of the Constitution. This was our nation’s original “get out of jail” card that we have yet to play.. and it’s NOW time to use i!
