The federal government collects an unbelievable amount of money every year from hard-working American citizens. Anyone who pays federal income taxes knows the all-too-familiar feeling every tax season: "The feds want how much of my paycheck?!"
We know that Washington has collected record-setting taxes in the last several years, but the total, $3.18 trillion tax bill can be difficult to imagine.
How about this: according to a new report, the average household sent $228,000 to D.C. between 2010 and 2019. According to the Daily Signal:
Some politicians running for federal office make it sound as if the biggest problem facing our country is that we don’t send enough of our paychecks to Washington, D.C.
They propose increasing or creating new federal taxes on income, payrolls, business profits, carbon emissions, financial transactions, wealth, and more.
Before they start trying to spend more and more of our money, they would do well to consider just how much they’re already spending. Looking back over the last decade, it’s clear they’ve already entered the “drunken sailor” stage.
From 2010 through 2019, U.S. households sent an average of $228,000 to Washington.
What would you have done with $228,000 over the last ten years? Bought a new house? Replaced the car that keeps breaking down? Sent all your kids to college?
Of course, the federal government needs to collect some taxes to perform their constitutional duties. But the fact is, as we've pointed out time and again, much of this money is thrown away on useless programs, extra-constitutional activities, and wasteful spending.
We know the feds aren't spending our money responsibly because the national debt keeps growing. With $1 trillion annual deficits, the current $23 trillion is set to increase exponentially over the next few decades, threatening the financial stability of future generations.
Enough is enough. Congress needs a wakeup call, and Article V gives the people and the states a way to send one.
Article V allows the states to gather to propose amendments to the Constitution. These amendments can force Congress to be fiscally responsible by mandating a balanced budget while also limiting spending and taxation. With a limited tax revenue stream and further restrictions on spending, Congress will have no choice but to begin cutting useless, wasteful programs and scaling back the scope of their involvement in everything from healthcare to education.
Decisions should be made as close to home as possible. Right now, the feds use their near-bottomless purse to control our lives. With a Convention of States, we can reassert our right to self-governance and get our nation's finances back on track.
