A Convention of States (COS) benefits all North Carolinians, regardless of political party affiliation. At stake is clarifying who decides about issues that matter to all of us – things that concern constituents here in North Carolina.
The central question motivating the COS movement and resolution is, who decides? Are taxpayers, constituents, businesses, and other civic organizations and institutions in NC better served by far-off elected and appointed officials in DC? Or, better served by the locally elected representatives in North Carolina, who are closer and more responsive to the ground truth here in the Old North State? We strongly advocate that it’s the latter -- local over national!
Some examples of how the COS Resolution benefits everyone:
Concern of North Carolinians | Benefit of local decision-making |
Educational curricula or funding centrally planned or mandated by a federal Dept of Education, which is out of sync with North Carolina’s people and specific skills needed for its growing economy | Local school boards and state education agencies tuned curricula, programs, and budgets to the needs of school districts and prospective employers in nearby counties |
Healthcare choices, plans, and initiatives centrally planned and funded, and dictated through sweeping one-size-fits-all programs and insurance plans. These often miss the mark of the healthcare needs of North Carolinians. And, are unsustainable – $55+ trillion in unfunded liabilities, and mounting | Local healthcare patient-responsive plans are tuned to their needs as consumers. Providers and producers can align medical services |
From Murphy to Manteo, North Carolina has great and unique beauty in its environmental and natural resources. Federal environmental programs must by definition use a least common denominator approach, representing national interests. This does not and never will fully align with, or represent, the hikers, campers, fishermen, boaters, and even spelunkers who call North Carolina home | Local conservation and utilization programs can best balance the needs of those who want to admire, explore, and fully utilize NC’s natural resources for personal and economic benefit |
Tax funds siphoned out of North Carolina, with North Carolina spending decisions made by disconnected bureaucrats in DC | More tax funds stay in North Carolina, directed by North Carolina legislators for North Carolina needs |
The COS movement needs your support, irrespective of political party, as it returns to the state decision-making that matters to tax-paying citizens. A Convention of States is truly nonpartisan: polling shows that 62% of North Carolinians support calling an Article V convention. National voter support by party is 55% Democrat, 72% Republican, and 62% Other. Opposition is low, ranging between 7% and 26% by party.
Please, sign the petition to join the large and growing grassroots voices, and consider volunteering to spread the word and advocate for North Carolina decisions, that serve us all better.
