Yes, We Can Still Join Hands Across the Aisle

Published in Blog on May 25, 2021 by Denah Butts

I do wish we could all be more nonpartisan. As an Independent, I 100% see COS as a nonpartisan movement, but it would certainly be difficult for Democrats to see it that way.

If I could express one thing to the Democrats, it's to not let the Republican voices in this movement convince you this movement is partisan. And, if I could express one thing to the Republicans in this movement, it would be to set aside partisan words in support of this nonpartisan movement, which can save our nation.

I like to say that differences make the world go ‘round and I definitely feel our nation benefits tremendously from varied thoughts and beliefs. At the end of the day, we’re all individuals with personal values and, if we’re all lucky, then everyone votes from a place of values, always paying more attention to actions rather than words, and accepting we all have different needs. Each state has different needs, after all. That concept is at the very heart of Convention of States, which seeks to maintain the sovereignty of all our unique states. Since our nation is a republic and our states are democracies, increasing state sovereignty is how we save our 50 democracies.

Lately, it feels like I’m watching a wrestling match between two entities which don’t truly exist beyond social media and TV. I rarely meet the extreme ideologies witnessed through the media while in my own community. Yet all the narratives are making it frightening for some to reach across the aisle and join hands. I am here to attest that we still can - we got this!

Most voters I speak with in our Swing State of Florida, regardless of political party, agree it's difficult to know the truth any more. We trust the news as much as we trust the average politician. Given this, most of us agree on limited terms for any political office. Too much power + too much time = corruption. We ALL know the truth of leaders becoming millionaires, paid handsomely with money withheld from our hard-earned paychecks — regardless of effort, regardless of the state of our economy, regardless of their performance and our moral objections.

Liberty is and always has been best preserved by a government closest to the people. Attend any local political meeting and you can be heard. We need to get back to state sovereignty as intended, where we can feel more comfortable compromising with one another, again. Federal overreach is what is causing all of the unrest, today.

And I find it difficult to imagine that ANY American, outside of federal politicians, wouldn't agree that requiring a balanced budget is a good thing. We do it for our own households. We couldn't live year after year beyond our means and not end up bankrupt or homeless. Why can’t our leaders, with all their combined experience and education, manage to do it for our nation? Like teenagers with someone else's money, there's no incentive - and no constitutional reason.

But, there could be.

Convention of States Action is the solution and the legislation is completely transparent: see the model legislation used at state level.

There are no secrets – nothing behind the curtain. Even the legislative debates in each state Congress are made available via YouTube.

Don't let the saboteurs scare you away from our power (the power of We the People) so they can keep theirs! A Convention of States can ONLY take place if 34 states agree to the same limiting legislation and 38 states MUST approve any amendments ratified. 38 states in agreement is a good thing… no matter how you slice it. Unlike the Constitutional Convention of 1787, when the states’ legislation did NOT restrict them, our Convention of States is restricted to 3 areas by legislation.

Get your voice in the mix. It’s ok to support Convention of States regardless of your politics because we ALL stand to benefit from reigning in the federal government.

Let’s do what Congress won't; put our heads together and solve these crucial problems. For already passing the COS Resolution, Go Florida! But we still need support: sign the petition and/or volunteer your time. Go ALL states for all stages progressed towards accepting this Convention! We got this!!!
