What would it take for the federal government to eliminate the deficit and shrink the national debt? What would motivate our "leaders" in Washington to place real limits on their own power to tax and spend?
To every rational and clear-thinking American, the answer is clear: nothing.
Federal officials have no incentive to get our nation's finances under control. Doing so won't help their reelection chances. It won't help the special interests that pay for the campaigns or increase their power within their party. Congress won't shrink the deficit and the debt until it's too late. By that point, our children and grandchildren will be paying the price in massive taxes, austerity measures, economic depression, and perhaps even worse.
That's why Wisconsin state representative Michael Shraa rose to speak in favor of the Convention of States Resolution.
"I have zero confidence that the federal government will ever, ever spend responsibly. I have zero confidence that the federal government will ever reduce our national debt," he told his colleagues. "It's not going to affect anyone in this room. But you know who it's going to affect? Our children and our grandchildren. They are the ones who are going to end up paying the price."
The Wisconsin legislature answered the call. The Assembly passed the Convention of States Resolution on a 58-36 vote, and now it's heading to the state Senate.
