Reason #3 why we need a Convention of States: Senator John McCain

Published in Uncategorized on July 18, 2018 by William Collins

Senator John McCain deserves our thanks for the many good things he has done for our country.

However, just like the friend that doesn't know when they have overstayed their welcome, Senator McCain doesn't know when to quit and go home. His unwillingness to give up power, even though he has been in office for over 39 years, is a testament to why term limits are needed.

On top of that, he has been unable to fulfill his responsibilities as a Senator for several months, because he is critically ill.

But that's not all, (as they say on TV). There is a very real possibility he will pass the remainder of his term (five years) to his wife. Apparently he thinks this is a monarchy.

When the Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution, they knew there would be those that could not give up their power. George Washington shocked the world when he voluntarily stepped down from the presidency after only two terms in office.

Unfortunately our current leaders do not exhibit the same selflessness as Washington, Jefferson, Adams, and many others.

Many politicians today seek never ending power. If they thought they could get away with it I have little doubt they would abolish elections. Rather than seeking to keep our country great, their top motivation is getting reelected.

Our representatives have become residents of Washington rather then their home states.  Senator McCain has been a resident of Washington for 39 years. He has only lived in Arizona for 36 years. He moved to Arizona from Washington in 1983.

It took him one year to get elected to the House of Representatives. He then moved back home...to Washington. He has no idea what it is like to live outside the bubble of the federal government.

In 1951 Congress passed term limits. Unfortunately they only saw the wisdom of this as it applied to the presidency. Even though there was limited debate on the Twenty-second Amendment, it was commonly thought that serving more than two terms could result in an abuse of power.

Congress has proved this by their inability to limit their own terms.

Now we must do what they will not. We must make term limits for members of Congress and judges a reality. Article V of the Constitution was added to ensure our leaders did not attain too much power.

Twenty-eight of the needed 34 states have passed resolutions requiring that Congress convene an Article V Convention. Click here for more information.
