The annual Davos World Economic Forum (WEF) was officially postponed until later this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
But that has not stopped the “by invitation only” group of powerful billionaires and international politicians from meeting because of the urgent “need for global leaders to come together to design a common recovery path and shape the 'Great Reset’ in the post-COVID-19 era” (from the World Economic Forum Blog).
The “Great Reset” is a plan to take the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change fears, and the current racial unrest and use their combined effect to push forward an agenda in which our traditional capitalist economy is replaced with what is now being called “stakeholder capitalism.”
“Stakeholder capitalism” is intended to sound very similar to shareholder capitalism to make it seem harmless. But stakeholder capitalism is a theory of organizational management and business ethics that accounts for multiple constituencies impacted by business entities including employees, suppliers, local communities, creditors, and others.
In other words this is a change from an economy in which businesses seek to produce the best product or service for their customers and find the best way to make money for their investors. Stakeholder capitalism instead focuses on “responsible growth and environmental, social and governance leadership.”
In other words, businesses--and thus all of us--must consider how every decision we make will impact the environment, racial equity, and social issues.
The Great Reset and stakeholder capitalism have some appealing aspects to them. Who doesn’t want to protect our environment, improve race relations, and combat the COVID-19 crisis?
The question, however, is who gets to decide how we measure the impact from individual companies? And who gets to decide what sort of impact is the greatest priority? Who gets to decide what businesses will make it and what businesses won’t?
Certainly not you or me. The same powerful national and corporate leaders who are attending WEF are those who will get to make the decisions about who wins and who loses in this new economy.
Those of us who are merely employees at those large companies or small business owners and blue-collar workers--that is the majority of us--will have no say in evaluating the impact of our businesses. And those who do not play along with the new rules will lose their businesses and jobs.
We are already seeing the beginning of this Great Reset in all of the job losses due to the pandemic and the lockdowns. Have you noticed how large corporations like Home Depot and Lowe's were allowed to stay open, while small mom and pop businesses were forced to close?
If the leaders at the World Economic Forum have their way, we will have less and less control over our lives and work. We must stop the powerful political and corporate leaders in the United States from carrying out their part in this worldwide Great Reset by limiting their power.
The way to do this is through an Article V Convention of States to restore power to the people and local leaders. We need to eliminate our permanent elite class of politicians by imposing fiscal restraints and term limits on them, so that they can no longer set the rules that all businesses and thus all Americans must follow.
