New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced this week an unprecedented exercise of state power in an apparent attempt to curb the COVID-19 pandemic. All visitors to the state are now required to quarantine for three days and show state officials a negative coronavirus test before they are allowed to "go about their business," according to the New York Post.
If visitors test positive, they are required to quarantine for an additional two weeks, and anyone who refuses to be tested must also quarantine for two weeks.
While commuters from surrounding states are exempt from the rule, all visitors from every other state must quarantine -- even if they aren't coming from a hotspot.
“There will be no metrics. There will be one rule that applies across the country,” Cuomo said.
New Yorkers Fleeing
For many New Yorkers, this kind of big-government overreach has driven them out of the state.
CNBC published a profile of several high-earning New York residents who are fleeing the city and the state after tyrannical lockdown orders, high taxes, and overbearing government regulation.
“I’ve never been as inundated with people leaving New York and Connecticut, any of these high-tax states, in my 40 years of doing this,” a New York-based tax attorney told the outlet. “Once Covid hit, with the recognition that people can work from any location, the floodgates opened.”
The pandemic has forced many Americans to look around and consider how their state government's policies have affected their daily lives -- and many are deciding that other states offer higher standards of living, lower taxes, and a less invasive government.
So, they're fleeing states like New York for states like Texas, Florida, and Nevada, according to CNBC.
How We Can Re-Assert Our Self-Governance
This shouldn't surprise anyone. Americans have always been independent, resourceful, and self-governing. They don't appreciate high taxes, COVID-19 restrictions, and big government, so they're doing something about it. Meanwhile, states like New York are facing the prospect of massive deficits to continue to fund their social welfare programs and bureaucratic nanny states.
Our federal politicians should take New York as a wakeup call, but they probably won't. They should see how the state's policies lower standards of living and force people to move, but it's unlikely they will.
That's why We the People need to take control of our federal government before New York's policies end up being implemented across the entire country. We need to shrink the size, scope, and jurisdiction of the federal government, and we can do exactly that with a Convention of States.
A Convention of States has the power under Article V of the Constitution to propose constitutional amendments that prohibit federal bureaucrats from imposing their will upon our daily lives. These amendments can force the feds to legislate only on those topics expressly mentioned in the Constitution, and stop the Supreme Court from legislating from the bench.
New York's overreach should never be applied to the entire country. If we can call the first-ever Article V Convention of States, it never will. Sign the petition below to voice your support!
