The curtain closed on a miserable day of battle. Frodo, despondent, weak, and weary, posed an inquiry for the ages — “What are we holding onto, Sam?” he asked. To which his faithful gardener replied, “That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.”
Popularized in Peter Jackson’s adaptation of “The Lord of Rings,” Sam’s famous, hope-imbued proverb has inspired countless millions for nearly 22 years.
But do we really believe it?
I mean, truly, deeply, earnestly, do we believe that there’s some good in this world worth fighting for? If so, what are we holding onto? What are we fighting for? Are we fighting for anything at all?
For nearly two and a half centuries, Americans have been blessed to live in the freest nation on earth. Unfortunately, that freedom is slowly slipping away from us. Now, we each must decide what kind of nation we will be — not only for ourselves but also for the next generation.
It would be irresponsible of us not to do our utmost to ensure our kids and grandkids enjoy the same freedoms we grew up with. Sometimes, though, in moments of despair, we begin to wonder if we have become too self-seeking to concern ourselves with the future of this nation. Perhaps we have lost faith that America is worth fighting for.
Perhaps our country’s best days are behind us.
But then we look at you — the grassroots — and we realize that hope is not lost. Hope is not lost because you have not surrendered it.
We cannot afford to wait. Freedom may be lost in our generation if we do not do something about it. We must stage the Great American Comeback — today. Not when we have the time for it. Not when it’s convenient. Not next year.
In 2024.
Right here, right now.
We are fighting for their America. We are fighting because the next generation deserves to live in a nation where they know what it means to be free.
That is our why. That is the good for which we fight — no matter how dark the road ahead may appear.
When you look in the eyes of your children or grandchildren, you are looking into the future of our country. What kind of America will they see? What kind of country will they inherit?
“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction,” Ronald Reagan once reminded us. “We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day, we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States, where men were free.”
From George Washington to Abraham Lincoln and beyond, the epoch-making, history-changing task of preserving freedom has now fallen to us. How will we respond? Will we rise to the challenge, or — God forbid — will future generations look back on us as those who squandered their inheritance, sentencing them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness?
The choice is ours.
By all you hold dear in this country, fellow patriots, I urge you to fight. Fight for this country, her future, and your children. Fight in state capitals and town hall meetings, college campuses and houses of worship. Fight on your knees, in your homes, and at your jobs.
Fight, not because you’re motivated by hate, but because your kids’ future is worth it. Every day, we labor to save their country, and we invite you to join us.
