Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar thinks that Americans deserve more COVID-19 "stimulus" money. In fact, according to her latest proposal, the federal government should be sending out $1,200 monthly checks from now until the end of time.
Dubbed the Sending Unconditional Payments to People Overcoming Resistances to Triumph (SUPPORT) Act, Omar's new universal basic income bill would send monthly checks to all Americans making less than $75,000 per year regardless of need or employment. In addition to the $1,200 per adult, the bill would also send checks for $600 per child.
Rather than replace current welfare systems, as even some conservative-leaning economists have proposed, Omar's plan would add monthly checks on top of what people are already receiving. Even though our country already sends checks and assistance to the most needy Americans, Omar doesn't think this is enough. We need increase the federal debt even further to send cash to everyone--even if they don't need it.
We knew this was coming. As soon as Congress passed the first round of COVID "relief" (and then a second and a third), liberty-loving Americans have been expecting a socialist politician to propose that we keep the money flowing. The COVID "stimulus" checks weren't a short-term solution to a nationwide problem--they were just the beginning of a total transformation of American life.
And don't be fooled: that's exactly what Omar is proposing. Her bill would dramatically expand the welfare state and forever make the American people dependent on the federal government. When Washington starts sending monthly checks to the vast majority of Americans, freedom and self-governance will come to an end.
If you think that's hyperbole, consider this. A family of four making $80,000 per year would receive an additional $43,200 per year under Omar's bill. Once that family becomes dependent on that money to send their kids to private school, make their car payments, or go to the beach every summer, will they ever vote to limit federal power and spending? Of course not. They'll be forever shackled to our "leaders" in Washington, totally unable to escape the web of regulations and mandates handed down from on high.
That's the real threat of Omar's bill. It would increase the national debt, increase taxes on middle-class Americans, and throw our nation's economy into chaos. But more dangerously, it would yoke We the People to the federal government and eliminate any chance of breaking away to pursue our own self-governance.
We must build a firewall against socialism before it's too late. Electing "good" politicians to Washington hasn't worked, as evidence by our continued slide towards big-government tyranny. The only way to end the threat of socialism is by looking to the states, and an Article V Convention of States is their most powerful tool.
A Convention of States is called and controlled by the states and has the power to propose constitutional amendments. These amendments can ban proposals like Omar's by clarifying the limited scope of federal power.
With amendments in place that restrict federal spending, a universal basic income will be off the table.
With amendments in place that limit federal jurisdiction, Congress won't have the power to dole out direct payments to the American people.
And with amendments in place that impose term limits, our elected representatives won't be so tempted to wreck our economy just to get re-elected.
Over two million Americans have signed the Convention of States Petition, and 15 states are on board. To join the movement, sign the petition below!
