We trust our federal officials to, at the very least, have a basic understanding of the government they help operate.
But that might not be true of Senator Elizabeth Warren.
CNN's Anderson Cooper asked the senator whether Democrats would get the short end of the stick in a compromise with Republicans over the border wall funding.
"Is that how the balance of power works?” he asked.
“Well, let’s talk about the balance of power,” Warren replied. “There are two coequal branches of government, the president of the United States and the Congress."
The problem is that there are three branches of government: the President, Congress, and the Supreme Court.
Warren is aware of the Court, obviously, but her slip of the tongue reveals something about how our federal officials imagine their position.
Politicians are obsessed with playing politics. So, in the midst of a battle between the Congress and the President, that's all they think about. In Warren's mind, right now, the only branches of government that matter are the two embroiled in the border wall conflict.
But the American people expect more of their federal officials. They expect them to take the long view and to do what's best for our children and grandchildren.
Unfortunately, Washington, D.C., has proven itself incapable of meeting that challenge. Our national leaders are more concerned with winning the next political fight than making the tough decisions for the future of our nation (check out the national debt, for example).
That's why millions of Americans have joined the Convention of States Project. A Convention of States has the power to strip power from our incompetence federal officials and restore that power to the states and the people.
These amendments can force Congress to get our nation's finances under control. They can impose term limits on members of Congress and reduce the size, scope, and jurisdiction of the federal government.
In short, a Convention of States can restore the balance of power between the states and the feds and get our nation back on track.
