"It's a big lie to people who are disadvantaged. It actually makes them worse off."
"You do not want anyone even close to socialism to come to this country."
"People are eating from trash bags in the streets. So how has socialism helped the country?"
"I don't think any Venezuelan can really like socialism because we've seen it put in place very well."
"It's not the route to go. It's not possible. It's not feasible."
These are just a few of the quotes from a group of Venezuelans who were protesting in Washington, D.C., earlier this year. They understand first-hand how big-government socialism can wreck an economy, destroy freedom, and plunge a country into hardship and despair.
Centralizing power does nothing to promote self-governance. Just the opposite: a large, powerful national government transforms free, independent citizens into government-dependent serfs.
And we're already on that road in the United States. For the last 100 years, the federal government has seized so much power from the states and the people that socialism seems like a viable option.
It's time to reverse course. Article V of the Constitution allows the states to call a Convention of States for the purpose of proposing constitutional amendments. These amendments can reduce the size, scope, and jurisdiction of the federal government, effectively prohibiting socialist schemes and putting D.C. back in its constitutional box.
We may be a long way from Venezuela right now, but the next few elections could spell disaster for future generations of Americans. We have to act now before it's too late. We have to call a Convention of States.
