Unlimited: They Will Never Limit Themselves

Published in Blog on December 15, 2022 by Maria Moungelis Bedard

Told ‘ya!

Even on committee chair term limits, politicians on Capitol Hill will never, ever, not even in a million years enact term limits on themselves.

Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) proposed a rules change within his party’s caucus to have a three-term limit (that’s 6 years) for serving as committee chair. His party rejected it.

Maryland’s very own Steny Hoyer (D-MD), current House Majority Leader told Business Insider:

"I'm not for term limits. Members need to make decisions, if they think a chairman is doing well or not, and if not, replace that chairman."

Of course, he’s not for term limits. Hoyer, age 83, has been in office since 1981 – that’s 20 terms in office! Think of all the power and perks he would have missed out on had he been limited in his years of "service".

In favor of term limits within his caucus, Congressman Ritchie Torres (D-NY) said earlier this year.

"Congress itself is a gerontocracy. It's an institution that prioritizes seniority to the exclusion of everything else."

Even Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) expressed her criticism of the current system in a June 18 Instagram post:

"If you are on a committee and want to chair it, you basically have to wait until almost everyone before you resigns or leaves office. That often takes decades."

Wow! The infamous AOC favors term limits! Who knew?

Case closed.

The Capitol Hill gerontocracy will never release their grip on power and give up the grift. We the People are The Solution through an Article V Convention of States.
