Watching Afghanistan fall to the Taliban has been incredibly difficult for many of our veterans. Thousands of these patriots joined the armed forces in response to the terror attacks on 9/11, and thousands more worked and fought in Afghanistan.
To see the country fall back into the hands of a terrorist regime is disheartening and frustrating. The federal government's incompetence has exposed our allies in the country to torture, abuse, and death. The Biden administration's rushed exit from the country has given terror a foothold and allowed billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded weaponry to fall into Taliban hands.
A Convention of States cannot help the people of Afghanistan, but it can send the most powerful message from We the People that Washington, D.C., has ever received. It can limit federal power and jurisdiction, restrict congressional spending, and get career politicians like Biden out of office.
That's why thousands of veterans have joined the Convention of States Project as part of our Veterans for COS coalition. These men and women have taken an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, and they continuing that work with their advocacy for an Article V Convention of States.
Grassroots activism can't compare to serving in the armed forces. Our volunteers don't risk their lives every day or face enemy fire from the Taliban. But as the veterans in the video above explain, they see the Convention of States movement as an extension of their fight to secure the blessings of liberty for future generations.
A Convention of States is called and controlled by the states under Article V of the Constitution. At this convention, states can propose constitutional amendments that fall into three categories:
Limit federal power
Impose fiscal restraints on Congress
Mandate term limits for federal officials
Once the convention proposes amendments, those proposals are sent back to the states for ratification. It takes 34 states to call a convention, and 38 states to ratify any proposals. Right now, 15 of the necessary 34 states have called for a Convention of States.

I pledge to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution in its entirety--including its grant of power to the people, through their state legislatures, to use Article V to protect our nation from an abusive, overreaching federal government—and I pledge to educate my friends, family members, and neighbors about the importance of using this constitutional tool to protect our liberty.
COS Petition:
Dear Legislator, Our federal government is on a dangerous course. I believe it's time for real solutions. Please support calling a Convention of States to place fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials.
“Thank goodness the founders had the wisdom to provide us with Article V of the Constitution, which gives us the right and power to hold and Amending Convention for the purpose of proposing amendments to restrain the scope and power of the federal government... Under the system of federalism, I support the efforts to gather a constitutional Convention of States consistent with Article V and honoring the 10th Amendment.” Allen West Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.) Former U.S. Congressman, Texas
“For years, too many in our deeply-entrenched federal government have willfully ignored the citizens they represent, essentially dissolving the Founders’ originally-intended balance of power and the primary role played by the states as sovereign entities in our national structure. My fellow veterans and I know firsthand the critical importance of a command and authority structure, which is why Washington’s refusal to uphold the Constitution compels the individual states to exercise their collective power through Article V.” Brian Birdwell Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.)Texas State Senator
“[O]ur nation is undergoing a period of great turmoil, and our federal government, Republicans and Democrats alike, has proven itself to be incapable of solving many of our national problems. The Washington, DC, political establishment has greatly overstepped its Constitutional boundaries in so many respects---it is truly time for the state governments to take action and return the federal government to its limited powers specified in our Constitution! I want to highlight to you that our nation is currently in a domestic war which we as veterans cannot afford to stand by and watch. We need to help win this war for the benefit of not only ourselves but also our posterity.” Paul VallelyMajor General, U.S. Army (Ret.)Author, lecturer, and counter-terrorism expert
“The federal government today has grown completely out of control, far beyond the fence of limited government intended by our nation's founders. The enormity of the federal government and the imbalance of power between the states and the federal government present a threat to our national security. The founders gave us a lawful and orderly process in Article V for the states to exercise the most powerful check on runaway federal power. For this reason, I support the Convention of States Project efforts to call an Article V convention to propose amendments that will limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government.” Bill CowanLt. Colonel, USMC (Ret.)Fox News Contributor
“The leviathan of today's federal government continues to grow unabated, pushing the people further away from our Founders' vision of self-governance. The Convention of States Project is the only constitutional pathway for citizens to save our Republic by restoring it to her citizens. Article V of our Constitution underscores the duty of active citizenship and I am proud to stand with millions of volunteers in this effort.” Pete HegsethMajor, US ArmyFormer CEO of Vets for Freedom and Concerned Veterans of America
“As United States military veterans, each of us took a lifelong oath to ‘support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic,’ and to ‘bear true faith and allegiance to the same.’ Today, the greatest threat to our Constitution is a highly-centralized federal government that regularly exceeds the limitations of its specifically enumerated constitutional powers, thereby invading the jurisdiction of the states, infringing upon the people’s liberty, and threatening our country with financial disaster. Washington, D.C. requires major, meaningful reforms. These reforms will only come from the outside, i.e., outside of Congress and the political establishment in Washington. This is why the Convention of States Project is essential to the survival of our constitutional republic. ” Paul GardnerLTC, USAR (Ret.)
