Twilight on the American Horizon

Published in Blog on July 12, 2021 by Leslie Jenkins, COSA MD

Independence Day has come and gone. Where will we be on July 4, 2022?

I can never remember a time, even as a child, when my heart did not skip a beat when I spotted the American flag waving in the wind. I also know that other Americans have shared and felt the same bond, unity, and sense of pride and purpose that our flag represents in our hearts.

A flag is a symbol, not the substance of something. When the substance that it represents changes, dissolves, or is distorted, the symbol also begins to lose its meaning.

When the nation loses its integrity, the flag loses its bond allegiance, and when the flag no longer holds respect among the people, clear evidence exists of severe internal decay.

Has America reached that point? I believe we have developed an allegiance gap, because we have an integrity gap. We need to return to the days that we stood for something.

Excerpts from Renewing the Soul of America by Charles Crismier

It is twilight on the American horizon. Unless Divine Intervention occurs, history will record the rise and fall of another empire. But the choice is ours. Will we—you and I—submit to God’s authority? Or will we continue the cry of our age, “I’ll do it my way”? The jury is still deliberating, and their verdict is not yet in. There is still time to settle this issue. But what we do, we must do quickly. And this is a decision that we must make both individually and corporately.

Have we lost our ability to speak with clear and convincing speech? Political correctness has gained a stranglehold on our ability to communicate in good faith with one another. That is a violation of our covenant. We cannot “mutually covenant and combine ourselves” “for our better Ordering and Preservation” when we create artificial barriers in the common language that prevent any sense or hope of mutuality.

Our labels become libels when we preempt discussion. As a “Civil Body Politick,” let us strive openly and in good faith in the “public square” in open forums. Resist the temptation to conform to political correctness. It is an adult form of peer pressure. It is insincere. And it is calculated to squeeze you into the labeler’s mold. It is designed to remove critical subjects from both public and private disclosure. Avoid it like the plague!

Having made our fundamental choices, we must be involved in the fray. If we will be self-governed. We must govern ourselves. That means that we must be informed and be involved. It is our civic duty arising out of our covenant to one another as a “Civil Body Politick.” But the goal is to serve, not to coerce or to “lord it over” our fellow citizens. Public service means public service. Our attitude is as important as our position.

You are a part of the grassroots movement called Convention of States. To help celebrate and renew America's soul and to preserve our liberty, I am asking you to try your best and share our petition with your family and friends.

Our efforts are not only to get our resolution passed, but also to grow an army of like-minded citizens. It is time! We need to rally together to save our great nation. "We the people" begins with you and with me. We cannot look to "the other guy." Each of us must decide. Get active in your local and state politics. We are the change.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:

Thank you so much for your service to the people of our district.
