The air in The Swamp is a powerful drug.
A short three years after Donald Trump vowed to pay off the national debt, the Republican President has struck a budget deal with the Democrats that not only fails to include any spending cuts but puts Trump on track to rival President Obama's spending habits during the Great Recession.
Politico reports:
With a new bipartisan budget deal that does nothing to cut federal spending, Trump is on track for another $1 trillion deficit this year. And there’s no reason to believe the following fiscal year will be any different, with ballooning deficits from higher spending, the 2017 tax cuts — Trump's signature legislative achievement, which slashed revenue — and none of the entitlement reforms long preached by Republican leaders on Capitol Hill.
Candidate Trump bragged that he would pay off the entire federal debt in eight years, but President Trump is governing as if deficits don't matter.
In fact, Trump is approaching the level of red ink from President Barack Obama’s first term, when Obama racked up trillion-dollar deficits four years in a row. Trump is on pace to do the same, starting with this year's yawning deficit of more than $1 trillion, according to budget estimates.
The President has fought to fulfill his campaign promise of draining The Swamp by trying to limit the growth of federal agencies. But this latest deal shows that he might be capitulating to the monsters in D.C. and maintaining the irresponsible, unsustainable spending of his predecessors.
It's time to cut up Washington's credit card. For too long they have increased their power and influence on the backs of the American taxpayers, and now they're pushing our nation to the brink of financial collapse.
The Founders included the Convention of States option in Article V of the Constitution for exactly this kind of scenario. With a Convention of States, the people, acting through the states, can propose constitutional amendments that force the federal government to get back on track.
With amendments balancing the budget, capping spending, and limiting taxation, Congress and the White House won't have a choice but to make the tough spending decisions for the good of future generations.
